01. The history of the name "Mt. Bizan" derived from the Manyoshu
"The poem from the Manyoshu that gave the name its name"
Mount Bizan is located almost in the center of Tokushima City, and its majestic appearance has made it a popular symbol of the city.
The name is said to come from a poem written by Funa no Okimi in March 734: "Reaching the Awa mountains, visible in the clouds like eyebrows, we row without knowing where our boats are docked" (Manyoshu, Volume 6, Miscellaneous Poems).
However, although the name "Mt. Bizan" was used among scholars in the mid-Edo period, it was not familiar to the common people, and it is thought that it only became established in the late Edo period.
Before that, they were called by the names of places at the foot of the mountains (Tondayama, Sakoyama, Yamayama, etc.) or by names related to temples and shrines (Otakiyama, Seimiyama, Mannenyama, etc.).
